Bowflex Dumbbells Recalled Due to 16 Reports of Failure

Nautilus Inc., a Washington-based company, is voluntarily recalling roughly 17,000 of its Bowflex SelectTech 1090 dumbbells after receiving reports of accidents and injuries related to the product.

The company, along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, issued the recall on June 7, stating the Bowflex SelectTech 1090 dumbbells have been prone to fail. Malfunctions of the selector dial on the black steel dumbbells can cause weight plates to fall off if the dumbbell has been lifted from its cradle. The company received 16 reports of failed selector dials and three reports of injury.

These dangerous and recalled consumer products were for sale in sporting goods stores between May 2011 and August 2011 and cost about $600. The dumbbells, sold in packs of two, have “Bowflex” written in grey on the top each handle, and a selector dial on each end of the cradle, which lists weights in red. The weights begin at 10 pounds and increase in increments of five, and have a weight capacity of up to 90 pounds.

The date-of-manufacture codes on the recalled products range between 1111 through 1136 and follow the letters “MAG” on a white label on the bottom of the cradle. The Bowflex label is in red at the center of the selector dial.
