On Thursday, September 13, 2018, residents in 3 suburban towns near Boston were affected by a series of deadly gas explosions that killed one person and injured 25 others. A state of emergency was declared for Andover, North Andover and Lawrence. The Massachusetts police reported fires were ignited in at least 39 homes, and affected nearly 8600 homes and businesses. The cause of the explosions is still under investigation, but officials believe the blasts were caused by over-pressurized gas lines.

Columbia Gas of Massachusetts is one of 7 natural gas distribution companies that are subsidiaries of NiSource. NiSource has links to at least 3 gas explosions in 3 states during the last 6 years, including Massachusetts. Columbia Gas has over 7 violations totaling $100,000 since 2010. Violations included inadequate gas standards, improper pressure testing and failing to follow procedures and federal pipeline safety regulations.

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker placed a company called Eversource in charge of repairs and said at a news conference that Columbia Gas was simply too slow in responding to the crisis, and that “raised major issues in our mind about the leadership team’s ability to deliver.”

The nationally recognized Colorado-based law firm of Burg Simpson is working to assist those harmed by the explosions.  Michael Burg and his team have decades of experience litigating complex cases and is dedicated to holding those responsible for the blasts accountable.  Mr. Burg has significant experience handling cases for victims of gas explosions, and has received multi-million dollar verdicts in these types of cases. Burg Simpson looks forward to representing and providing a voice for those individuals and businesses affected by this tragedy.
