FDA Safety Communication
On September 17, 2024, the FDA issued a Safety Communication to alert “patients, caregivers, health care providers, and health care facilities about the increased risk of thigh bone fracture (postoperative periprosthetic femur facture) with the use of the Zimmer Biomet CPT Hip System Femoral Stem 12/14 Neck Taper.” The FDA Safety Communication was based on recent research which found a higher risk of thigh bone fractures with the Zimmer CPT cemented femoral stem compared to other similarly designed cemented femoral stems.
Zimmer Recalls CPT Hip System
In July 2024, Zimmer issued a Field Safety Notice and Class 2 recall due to the increased risk of femur fractures with its CPT Hip System. The Class 2 recall was issued to update the surgeon’s instructions for use (IFU) to warn of the increased risk of post-operative bone fractures associated with the CPT Hip System. Zimmer’s Field Safety Notice states that it plans to stop selling the CPT Hip System by December 2024.
On September 18, 2024, Zimmer issued a letter to U.S. Surgeons explaining that the United Kingdom joint registry data found that patients with the Zimmer CPT femoral stem had a rate of femur fracture at approximately 1.4%, which was more than twice the rate of femur fractures for similarly designed femoral stems. The letter advised surgeons to consider using an alternative prosthesis for hip replacement.
