What is Elmiron
Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is prescribed for the treatment of painful bladder syndrome or interstitial cystitis (IC). Unlike more common pain relievers that are taken as needed when pain arises, Elmiron is prescribed to be taken every day to relieve the pain associated with IC. Although it is used to treat IC, there are serious questions as to whether Elmiron actually works. Data from one of Janssen’s own clinical studies showed Elmiron to be less effective than a placebo.
What Injuries Are Caused by Elmiron
Recent scientific studies have recognized a causal link between the use of Elmiron and damage to the retina, the part of the eye that senses light and is critical to sight. Some of the most common symptoms reported by Elmiron users include difficulty reading, difficulty adjusting to bright light and/or darkness, difficulty seeing at night, metamorphopsia (straight lines appear curvy), and blurred vision. Further testing by an ophthalmologist or retina specialist can confirm whether Elmiron has damaged the retina. Such damage is frequently referred to as pigmentary maculopathy, PPS-associated maculopathy, Elmiron toxicity, or macular toxicity.
Janssen Pharmaceuticals Failed to Warn About Elmiron’s Risks
When Elmiron was first marketed and sold to treat IC, the prescribing information contained no warnings about eye and vision damage from use of Elmiron. Despite mounting scientific evidence that Elmiron damages the eyes, Janssen waited until June 16, 2020 to update Elmiron’s label to provide any warning of retinal damage. Only now does the label acknowledge that “[p]igmentary changes in the retina, reported in the literature as pigmentary maculopathy, have been identified with long-term use of Elmiron.” Sadly, these warnings came far too late for the countless individuals now suffering eye injuries as a result of their use of Elmiron.
Elmiron Lawsuits
Janssen Pharmaceuticals is facing hundreds of lawsuits from around the country based on the injuries caused by its drug. The lawsuits set forth numerous allegations, including that Elmiron was defectively designed because it is not safe for use and can cause serious eye damage, and that Janssen Pharmaceuticals failed to provide adequate warnings and instructions to consumers and their physicians.
To efficiently handle the number of lawsuits that have already been filed, the cases have been consolidated before one judge in the District of New Jersey. This type of case consolidation is known as Multi-District Litigation (MDL). While each individual’s Elmiron lawsuit remains their own, the initial phases of litigation are consolidated for purposes of judicial economy.
